This is the news you’ve been waiting for, and I don’t blame you. The Bottega Café officially reopened its doors two weeks ago with a menu full of spring novelties. We caught up with the beloved chef behind a family of favorite restaurants, Frank Stitt, to learn more about the opening.

“It’s a really bustling and exciting place again, and people have this excitement of going back to one of their favorite places where the food is great, the drink is great, and the music is great. It was great to find the cafe again.

What You Came Here For: NEW Menu Items

Of course, you’re probably wondering about the new menu items Bottega Café is introducing. We’ve tried a few of their new offerings, and I’m here to tell you: you can’t go wrong with anything. Pro tip: Any trip to Bottega should start with their focaccia and olive oil, the perfect combination with light, spongy bread that soaks up that delicious oil.

“We are at the dawn of spring, so we are making a risotto with crayfish, prawns, sweet peas and tender herbs. We do a lot with bulb onions and we brought back this roasted shrimp with chili and pickled peppers.

Here are some new menu items:

  • Stuffed eggs + tapenade
  • Crostini with burrata, prosciutto di parma + arugula
  • Roasted prawns with Calabrian chili butter, garlic, lemon + parsley

If you asked me to pick a favorite, I really couldn’t. The deviled eggs were the perfect light appetizer to start the meal, but I could order the crostini to enjoy on their own.

Next: the entrees.

  • Meatball piadine with mozzarella, marinara, olives, pepperonicini + arugula on a bread made with pizza dough
  • Shrimp risotto with gourmet peas, bulb onion + mint
  • Roasted salmon with orzo, peppers, bulb onion, chickpeas + caper aioli

A tip when getting ready to order: find a few friends and spread out your menu items on the table. This way you will have the opportunity to try everything Bottega has to offer.

Of course, we finished with the desserts. We had two perfectly decadent options: the lemon semifreddo, a light frozen mousse with a delicate vanilla and lemon flavor, and the burnt honey cake, a 10-layer crepe cake that I’ve been dreaming about ever since I got it. first tried last year.

An update on Highlands Bar & Grill

We are extremely delighted that Bottega Café is open again, but we also wanted to know the status of Highlands Bar & Grill, the first restaurant Frank Stitt opened in Birmingham in 1982.

“We like to think that in the next few months Highlands will be open although we will probably start with both sides of the bar open in Highlands. It’s exciting and on the horizon.

Throughout the pandemic, Chez Fonfon has remained open, thanks in part to the restaurant’s dedicated fans as well as the willingness of staff to introduce change.

“Many of our regulars were quick to wear their jackets, sweaters and blankets to sit outside on the terrace. The back of Fonfon is such a beautiful place, and we have limited spacing and tables inside. Fonfon is one of those places where this piece overflows with energy. You smile when you go to Fonfon, and we are delighted to find this energy again and to find the customers who dine at the bar.

There’s something particularly exciting about the businesses that help put Birmingham on the map, and Bottega Café is certainly one of them.

“Some people have been with us for years and share our philosophy which is based on respect, knowledge, care and a genuine welcome. I hope people will feel this is a special place for them.

What’s next for Bottega and the Stitt family of restaurants? As well as keeping an eye out for the official reopening of Highlands Bar & Grill, we’ll be staying tuned to Big Spoon Creamery. Stitt told us that they are teaming up with Big Spoon to create a specialty ice cream for the Bottega Café!
