Chez Nous reopens with new owner, mostly non-French menu

Union Street restaurant keeps its name, offers lower prices and everything from New England clam chowder to barbecue dishes and lobster ravioli

SCHENECTADY – Chez Nous, part of the Union Street row of restaurants and an upscale spot for French fare from late 2015 to early 2019, has been relaunched under new ownership under the same name but with an expansive menu , different and more moderately priced largely lacking in French influences.

The building, at 707 Union St., is a beautifully renovated home from around 1875 that is rented by new owner Pete Nichols, who ran food service at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Clifton Park in recent years and previously worked for Clifton. He said he runs Chez Nous with his children, Ashley and William Nichols, and they kept the name Chez Nous because it is recognized in the market and its English translation, literally “with us”, but understood as meaning to be with someone. , sets the tone for the desired ambiance and food of the new venture.

Hours of operation are currently 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. In its first few weeks, the restaurant is offering its lunch menu all day, with items from the dinner menu rotating as daily specials, according to a note on its website. The site also lists future pub, vegetarian/vegan and pre-Proctors menus.

The dinner menu features 19 soups, salads and appetizers ($8 clam chowder to $18 for “the ultimate chef’s salad”), six pastas ($10 margherita cappellini to $20 lobster ravioli) and 13 entrees. , including a $32, 16-ounce New York strip loin, a $24 barbecue plate, and six seafood items that average $25. A bacon cheeseburger on the lunch menu is $16. Chez Nous does not yet have a liquor license, according to its website.

The original Chez Nous opened in December 2015 and closed after Valentine’s Day weekend in 2019, with the owners saying: “Chez Nous’s volume of business is not high enough to cover the costs.”
