McDonald’s is bringing back a classic menu item (with a take)

What’s old can quickly become new again in the world of fast food. Some chains bring back the same items on an annual basis (such as Starbucks (SBUX) – Get the Starbucks Corporation report Pumpkin Spice Latte) while others delve into their past to find something that makes people nostalgic.

Major McDonald’s hamburger fast food chains (MCD) – Get the McDonald’s Corporation reportWendy’s (MAGNIFYING GLASS) – Get the Wendy’s Company report (The)and Restaurant Brands International (RSQ) – Get the report from Restaurant Brands International Inc. Burger King tends to do a little of each. Wendy’s, for example, just brought back its Summer Strawberry Salad and Burger King regularly brings back variations of its classic Whopper.

McDonald’s does this, but it also has a huge range of past menu items to draw from in order to bring back stale customers. The fast-food chain is teasing its American customers by asking them which item to “bring back” to its Twitter account.

People flooded this post with all sorts of requests for past items, including some silly ones (no one really wants Onion Nuggets or Fish McBites coming back), but a few favorites popped up often. Perhaps the number one request in this highly unscientific poll was “Snack Wraps,” a tortilla-based menu item that was discontinued in 2016.

Snack Wraps are still on the chain’s menu in Canada and the company recently expanded its range in the UK.

McDonald’s could bring back snack wraps

McDonald’s discontinued Snack Wraps in the United States because they weren’t selling well enough to justify the time it took to make them. It wasn’t a failure, but the chain strayed from healthy options in the US, so a middle seller that didn’t serve the company’s target audience didn’t succeed.

Fans, however, have never let the fast food giant forget about Snack Wraps which seem to have a devoted following. Snack Wrap enthusiasts probably won’t head to the UK just to get a fix, but the growing popularity of the products and expanding range across the pond could lead to a comeback in the US.

It’s also worth noting that the new line of McDonald’s Snack Wraps deviates a bit from the original intent, but it generally remains true. There are healthy options, but there are also a few that may appeal to American tastes.

McDonald’s expands its line of snack wraps

The UK Snack Wrap range has four choices and they are actually called “Big Flavor Wraps”, but they look like the older version once offered in the US. Varieties include.

  • The Spicy Vegan: Tasty vegetarian dippers with spicy relish, crunchy lettuce, red onion and tomato, all wrapped in a soft, toasted tortilla, and certified vegan by the Vegetarian Society.
  • The garlic chicken mayo: New and improved grilled chicken with garlic mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce and cucumber in a soft, grilled tortilla. Also available in crispy chicken.
  • Sweet Chilli Chicken: Crispy chicken with a sweet chili sauce, fresh mayonnaise, lettuce and cucumber in a soft, grilled tortilla. Also available in new and improved grilled chicken.
  • BBQ Chicken and Bacon One: New and improved grilled chicken, plus bacon with smoky BBQ sauce, fresh mayonnaise, tomato and lettuce in a soft, grilled tortilla. Also available in crispy chicken.

The sauces and mayonnaise associated with the fried chicken versions may be a little less healthy than the regular versions (but health has always been relative when it comes to the fast-food chain). McDonald’s never promised to bring Snack Wraps back to the United States, but their enduring popularity and the fact that they’re still made in a few countries makes them ripe for a return to the United States.
