Review: First Look at Mr. MacGregors’ New Fall & Winter Menu – Christina O’Neill


A restaurant on the south side eschews small plates for large, no-frills dishes to keep the people of Glasgow fed this winter.

Mr. MacGregors at Netherlee upgraded his food offering with a new relaunch of the fall and winter menu after deciding that, ahem, “size really matters” when it comes to your dinner.

We are avowed queens of height to Glasgow Live; Sure, bite-size plates are all the rage and allow you to sample a wide range of dishes, but sometimes they leave you wanting to ask for more. A bigger screen arrives and makes you walk away with a smile on your face … and that’s exactly what you need when the nights start to fall.

We headed over to Mr. MacGregor’s in Clarkston Road to check out their new menu – here’s how we fared.

Fallon Cowley, owner of Mr Macgregors, said: “We opened up Mr MacGregors during the height of the pandemic and quickly became known for our breakfast and brunch offering which has been extremely popular in the local market.

“But after listening to the feedback from our regulars, we designed a redesign of our lunch and dinner menus for the winter period.

“People want to eat their own meals and are a bit jaded by the small plate trend. So we have brought back many classic dishes with a fair twist in larger portions and are confident that the local market and beyond will be really responsive to changes.

“All dishes are prepared from fresh ingredients by our amazing team and are overseen by our in-house group executive chef. Each menu has been carefully designed to ensure there is something for everyone, whatever their taste. from coffee and cake, soup and sandwich to a beautiful 3-course meal to celebrate a special occasion. “

How’s the menu?

The restaurant serves brunch, lunch, and dinner with an extensive list of cocktails, gins, and wines. We are zoning on the new A La Carte, which has been prepared for hungry diners.

To start, you have the goat cheese mousse with butternut squash, dried salmon with beetroot and juniper berries and lamb meatballs and chorizo ​​among many others that you can discover below.

Classic comfort food with a twist is in place for the main course; you have a Cheeseburger, Steak Fries and Caesar Salad with Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Chipotle Apricot Jam, Slow Roasted Beef Cheek, Halloumi Honey Fries and Sesame Seeds and Beer Breaded Haddock with Bloody Marie Sauce.

Don’t worry about the others; the dessert menu covers all the bases. Coconut Creme Caramel with Raspberry Coconut Crumbs, Winter Ginger Spice Pudding, Pineapple Cheesecake and Cranachan are some of the delicious treats that the staff at Mr MacGregors prepare for the afters. .



A tempting range of starters

What we had as a starter

Scottish scallops are a decadent dinner staple – and probably the best dish for Insta if you’re feeling happy. They taste as wonderful as they look; tender, buttered fillets served with crispy black pudding and bacon on a fresh-tasting pea purée.

If you’re looking for something a little more filling to start, the haggis and herb mash wrapped in crispy filo packets is a good choice, paired with a tangy whiskey sauce. You can never go too far wrong with anything pastry.

Food of the lightly fried variety is another security, in our humble opinion. Try the tempura shrimp, piping hot and dipped in a mild chili sauce. Okay, it’s not as grill-worthy as its other entrees, but it’s a simple, hassle-free bite – there’s a good chance the kids will like them, too.

Vegetarian or cut down on meat? Butternut squash goat cheese mousse holds its place among the carnivorous contenders on the menu. Smooth whipped cheese paired with roasted root vegetables and cleverly plated to boot.

What about the sector?

Even picky eaters couldn’t refuse the buttermilk fried chicken, accompanied by a tangy apricot chipotle jam and coleslaw (you can eat a plate of pasta on its own) – or the Halloumi fries, dipped in honey. and encrusted with crunchy sesame seeds on a bed of fruit salad. Trust us, it works.

Slow-roasted beef cheek is a hearty fall dish with a difference – served with mashed herbs, blackcurrant braised cabbage, and red wine juice. The meat gave in perfectly to the fork and is bursting with bold flavors. Not for small appetites.

If you go for seafood but don’t want anything too strong, grilled Lebanese sea bream is a great starter. The white fish, which is presented in fillets, with a delicate taste and a fleshy texture, is served with a couscous with vegetables and a tangy yogurt with herbs. It’s light, tasty and something a little different; let’s face it, how often do you cook sea bream at home? Give it a chance.

And now for dessert.

We love restaurants that truly pay homage to Scottish cuisine – and you can’t beat a traditional Cranachan. Layers of oats, whiskey infused cream and berries with a honeycomb, it looks like spreaded knickerbocker glory. As US delegates said in a pre-Cop26 taste test, this is the only dish Scotland has that makes people realize that we have a summer.

Speaking of summer, the pineapple cheesecake was the sun on a plate; a citrus slice of the fruit over cream cheese, a crunchy cookie base and chocolate ice cream topped with chili pepper adding a little heat to the mix.

For those of you who are already counting until Christmas, you can get into the festive spirit with Winter Spiced Pudding with Orange Creme Englaise; a comforting dessert made to warm up on cold nights.
