Picture it: Sewickley, 2022. You stop at Mambo Italia for a bite to eat and realize the whole place has been revamped.
Say “Ciao” to the renovated Italian restaurant at 424 Broad St.
Business partners Joe Piccirilli and John Schiavo bought the 7-year-old business shortly after it closed this summer. Mambo Italia reopened on January 4 with a new menu and a new vibe.
Piccirilli, which also owns the nearby 424 Walnut restaurant, began offering pizza at this fine-dining establishment during the pandemic. The pizza was such a hit with customers that Piccirilli jumped at the chance to rename Mambo Italia and offer the Neapolitan pies in a relaxed setting.
The pizzas are baked in a wood-fired oven and the offerings include Mambo with grape tomatoes, prosciutto di Parma, arugula, Parmigiano, extra virgin olive oil and fresh mozzarella. Pizza chef Justin Giammario makes about 50 pounds of fresh mozzarella every day.
The culinary team includes industry veteran chefs Rob Longerman and Dan Eaton.
Warm up with a cup of Stracciatella soup (that’s Piccirilli’s uncle’s recipe) and an order from Arancini Napoli, croquettes stuffed with egg pasta, prosciutto and mozzarella which are then breaded and fried. Sample traditional dishes such as Pollo Alla Parmigiana, homemade spaghetti topped with a lightly breaded chicken cutlet, homemade red sauce, mozzarella, and imported San Marzano tomatoes. Refresh yourself with a chocolate, vanilla or strawberry ice cream, or treat yourself to a piece of tiramisu, a rich layered dessert of finger cookies, espresso, mascarpone, eggs, liqueur of Godiva chocolate and cocoa.
Mambo Italia, which now has a modern but rustic vibe, is currently BYOB. The dining room seats 56, and once a plastic shield is installed at the bar, patrons can sit and watch the chefs do their magic.
On hot sunny days, the front of the building’s garage door will open and there will be seating outside.
The opening hours are from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday (last seat at 8 p.m.), from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday (last seat at 9 p.m.) and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. (last seat at 8 p.m.).
Piccirilli and Schiavo wish to open several Mambo Italia sites in Pittsburgh and beyond.
