Southampton Restaurant Main Prospect supports Ukraine with Ukrainian menu

As Ukraine comes under attack from the forces of Russian President Vladimir Putin, people around the world are doing all they can to help the countless Ukrainian families in need. Among those raising money to help are Binh Douglas and Sean Curneen, owners of Main Prospect in Southampton.

“For me, and I think I echo what Sean thinks, the only thing I know how to do is serve food, serve dinner,” Douglas says. “How can I positively influence the community or the people who need this help through what I do? »

The answer: by creating a limited-time Ukrainian menu and cocktail at Main Prospect, with 100% of net proceeds going to celebrity chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit organization that provides fresh meals to fleeing Ukrainians. the country, as well as many still in Ukraine. Having long followed Andrés’ efforts to feed people in the aftermath of disasters around the world, Curneen reports that selecting WCK as the recipient of their fundraising initiative was “absolutely obvious” because Andrés proven to be a proven ally in these situations. “When things like this happen, you have all these things popping up – donate here, donate there. For us, we don’t feel obligated to know where our money is going. We know where it’s going. »

Located in the former home of community-oriented restaurant John Duck, Main Prospect also prioritizes its community, which Douglas says has a significant number of Eastern European families. For this initiative, they contacted these locals to identify their favorite Ukrainian dishes. “We wanted to find things that people could remember, could know, could think of once they saw them, and that would be accessible from that culture,” he says. Once they got their feedback, they took the list to head chef John Trzcinski, who put together an authentic menu of items like beetroot soup, pierogies, chicken kyiv, cabbage stuffed and potato pancakes with caviar.

The menu is accompanied by a specialty cocktail called The Zelenskyy, created by Brian Tupper with Ukrainian Heritage Rye vodka. The drink features the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag with blueberries and lemon zest on a skewer.

The owners of Main Prospect hope Hamptons residents who have been looking for a way to support Ukraine but don’t know how to go about it, can visit the restaurant and learn about the Ukrainian menu. “It’s the community that invests the money, we’re just facilitating it,” notes Curneen.

“We felt the overwhelming desire and urge to do something,” adds Douglas. “And I’m glad people are rallying behind that.”
