MARIETTA – The Valley Gem Sternwheeler, Marietta’s riverboat, is going to have a special New Years Eve cruise featuring the countries New Years Day falls on first.
Captain Heather Sands, one of the boat’s pilots and the organization’s executive director of operations, said the New Year’s Eve cruise will be family-friendly and open to the public of all ages.
Sands said the event is “Maybe just an opportunity to experience food from other countries, that was the idea of the trip.”
They will have food and music from the countries where New Year’s Day comes first, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Iceland and Canada.
There will be a menu from these countries, with dinner served first, then appetizers and dessert.
The dinner will consist of:
* Portuguese Chickpea Salad
* BRAZILIAN CHEESE BREAD
* Chicken Peri Peri (Portugal)
* Brazilian steak
* Brazilian roasted vegetable feijoada
* Portuguese Rice and Tomatoes
* Roasted potatoes with paprika (Portugal)
The aperitifs will be:
* Chimichurri Meatballs (Argentina)
* Rice balls (Argentina)
And the dessert will include:
* Nanaimo Bars (Canada)
* Cardamom Apples Hasselback with Skyr (Iceland)
There will also be live music with musicians mixing music from travel-related countries, and regular music.
A champagne toast will take place at midnight.
The New Years’ Round the World Cruise runs from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Admission to the trip is $ 50 for all ages.
Another afternoon cruise is called Noon Year’s Eve.
It will include the Gem’s regular lunch, as well as background music, but not live.
The cruise is from noon to 2 p.m.
Admission for adults is $ 34, $ 32 for those 55 and over, $ 24 for children 3 to 12, and infants will be admitted free.
Cruises begin at their facilities at 601 Front Street under the Marietta Bridge.
Cruises will travel up the Muskingum River to the Ohio River, tour Blennerhassett Island, and return to their facilities.
