Christmas comes alive at The Ivy Brasserie in St Albans, with colorful decor and a warm atmosphere lending itself perfectly to the most magical time of year; the kind of place you can retreat to for a winter evening and savor an assortment of fine food and drinks.
My partner and I visited the restaurant with our two year old daughter, whose standards are probably higher than most because not only does she demand to be fed exactly what she likes, but she also wants to be entertained. throughout the meal, which our server discovered quite quickly!
The festive menu begins with a range of delicious cocktails, and we couldn’t resist the Thyme for Apple Pie, a heartwarming blend of Chivas Mizunara Cask Scotch Whiskey mixed with lemon and cinnamon and finished with apple cider, and the spectacular Little Helper, a refreshing combination of Monkey 47 Black Forest Gin, cranberries, passion fruit and lime garnished with Prosecco and finished with a dash of festive cotton candy.
The cotton candy was a perfect way to keep the little one happy while she waited for her fish and chips, and both cocktails were of The Ivy’s usual exceptional quality, which made for a great start to our evening.
The à la carte menu includes Christmas specials including a duck liver parfait, a lobster and shrimp cocktail, a shepherd’s pie with confit goose and linguine with wild mushrooms and truffles, but we have rather tempted by other seasonal dishes.
I had a rich and flavorful tomato soup as a starter (the roasted pumpkin and butternut squash option sold out) and the almost legendary Ivy truffle burger for my main course, while my partner selected squid with salt and butter. pepper followed by lobster linguine. Nothing disappointing, both flavor and presentation, and the plates were duly emptied without hesitation.
We ended with a shared dessert from the holiday specials. Snowball Fight is a brandy ice cream in a white chocolate shell, accompanied by a gingerbread and cream sauce. Seems like a snowball landed on your plate, and while it tasted amazing, it was also much lighter than you expected, note if you’ve had two dishes before.
Oh for those evenings that didn’t involve a waitress taking a dip to grab the two-year-old after she threw herself from her chair! Among the many things The Ivy can be proud of is exceptional customer service, and our waiter is no exception, so thank you Holly for your hard work, including keeping our daughter entertained and rescued.
